Montessori play: What it is and why parents love it
If you’ve seen or heard about Montessori playthings, you may have noticed that they’re a little different from the bright, flashing, plastic, battery-operated gadgets that tend to fill toy store shelves. Instead, Montessori-inspired toys:
- Are often made from natural materials, which can appeal to young children’s senses and may be sustainably crafted
- Focus on one skill at a time, allowing young children the practice and repetition they crave
- Encourage independence by introducing them to real-life objects
- Require active engagement with the toy—think “child-powered” instead of “battery-powered.” This challenges a child’s brain to figure out how to play instead of being a passive observer.
The Play Kits by Lovevery are inspired by Montessori and designed by child development experts for ages 0 to 5. Our Montessori-aligned playthings engage children’s natural curiosity through repetition and purpose, while building real-life, practical skills.
Okay, but what is “Montessori”?
The Montessori method was developed by an Italian doctor named Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. Dr. Montessori was an inspiration, someone who broke gender barriers, fought for women’s rights, and believed in educating children with learning differences.
Dr. Montessori believed in promoting independence in even the smallest children. She did this by carefully preparing the learning environment with a specific set of educational tools and by providing plenty of uninterrupted work time.
